A Little Focus

Framing

I asked ChatGPT for simple photography challenges that I could do with just my phone while traveling. Today, it suggested thinking about frames within frames.

Look for an opportunity to frame your subject using natural or built elements—doorways, arches, gaps in fences. Make the frame part of the story.

I'm trying to be more deliberate about looking for anything that could be an interesting photo in day-to-day life. This door stood out to me on my way to the gym. On the way back, I saw the framing by the tree and the short wall.

I wish I had moved the camera lower; the door is a bit uncomfortably high in the photo. I wasn't sure what to do with the plant on the right; it felt necessary to include it to frame the door, but I couldn't include more without adding a storefront into the frame. But it feels incomplete as is. The weather today is gloomy and will likely be that way for the rest of the week, but hopefully, the sun comes out so I can retry the photo with different light.

ChatGPT suggests trying a shallower focus to provide emphasis. That would be cool to try if I had something other than a cell phone camera.
